As I wrote the first two parts of <i>Ōtea: Rock of Ages</i>, elements of the plot and themes emerged from the application of cultural principles (tikanga). </p><p>Tikanga can be thought of as a set of rules, protocols for living which abound in all folklore and mythology. For example, in <i>The Hobbit</i>, trolls must be underground before sunrise, lest they turn to stone, but this is an old rule from Northern European legend, that Tolkien did not invent, but made use of as an important plot point. As I wrote and illustrated <i>Ōtea</i>, tikanga provided rules for the development of story, allowing characters to act in accordance with their nature, and providing clues for solving plot problems. </p><p>In the Māori belief system, lizards, green geckos in particular , were thought to be omens of evil. In <i>The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Māori Myth & Legend</i>, Margaret Orbell notes: “Green geckos were especially dreaded when they lifted their heads and emitted chattering sounds thought to be laughter. This was a terrible omen” (p. 154). Mokokata, the green gecko of Ōtea, was named directly from this belief: moko meaning lizard, and kata (or kakakata) meaning laughter.</p>Zakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15976167040903931932noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9021753070639473674.post-46191839900599198802020-09-26T17:35:00.000+12:002020-09-26T17:35:23.261+12:00Thinking about kupu<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZsfkvARpy2TOKtXkU-rUPKky7sfJNq6kpAeUE0Dx5axJ36LeZ0SFVY_aqsi2ZgNYbmbwurWlVILtUWYZL_nFHbcz52wFoJWz-6V1PGA00T0Uc-AeVPBH2ZYA_XWaMUIMkt9hC2ZcBAzJh/s1080/ChrSquareGridSQ.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZsfkvARpy2TOKtXkU-rUPKky7sfJNq6kpAeUE0Dx5axJ36LeZ0SFVY_aqsi2ZgNYbmbwurWlVILtUWYZL_nFHbcz52wFoJWz-6V1PGA00T0Uc-AeVPBH2ZYA_XWaMUIMkt9hC2ZcBAzJh/w400-h400/ChrSquareGridSQ.png" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Te Wiki o te Reo Māori made me think about all the Māori words and phrases (kupu) that I use in the Ōtea comics. Even though the story is primarily written in English, I've tried to incorporate many kupu Māori: names for animals, stars, planets, places and supernatural beings, of course, but also important cultural concepts and whakatauki (proverbs). Here's an example: Ahurei (unique, important, distinguished).<div><br /></div><div>My aim is to weave these Māori words and ideas into the story in a way that makes them meaningful and evocative for the reader.
<div><br /></div><div>I decided to go through the first Ōtea comic, Ōtea: Rock of Ages 1, and create a glossary of all the kupu Māori that I used - just to see how many there really were! Here are some thumbnails for a page in my forthcoming comic, Ōtea: Rock of Ages 2:<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl6wsHoMnWqzRv4HUUVsH0D6aEMstcJbU6QU4fskGL4HVXOJTwfseoYaA7pioNqAppN2vbCCG3E6fhJTnS8yKAazqIFqnA8iMSXB-iIICcSgOSkWnUdOBnTrRQ5xuanS6EJ-d19hCN_Qu_/s1600/KareareaPageLayoutsSquare.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="595" data-original-width="595" height="476" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl6wsHoMnWqzRv4HUUVsH0D6aEMstcJbU6QU4fskGL4HVXOJTwfseoYaA7pioNqAppN2vbCCG3E6fhJTnS8yKAazqIFqnA8iMSXB-iIICcSgOSkWnUdOBnTrRQ5xuanS6EJ-d19hCN_Qu_/w476-h476/KareareaPageLayoutsSquare.png" width="476" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can see I'm trying out different layout ideas and ways to combine panels on the page.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And here are the finished inks for that page:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPWiU8S55r9HiXZ0txAfLxO-iV1rkJhWSKoKDP344CUhjk4QH6vaQImkbRyMmsG2esmdsSGMmREaUH1k3da7uKikuCZK28hV3SzD1hyphenhyphenjks8qM4mYiNHYiy_HlNwgzGtv0OBbI9VQDk4j9/s1600/KareareaPageFinalSquare.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="595" data-original-width="595" height="476" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPWiU8S55r9HiXZ0txAfLxO-iV1rkJhWSKoKDP344CUhjk4QH6vaQImkbRyMmsG2esmdsSGMmREaUH1k3da7uKikuCZK28hV3SzD1hyphenhyphenjks8qM4mYiNHYiy_HlNwgzGtv0OBbI9VQDk4j9/w476-h476/KareareaPageFinalSquare.png" width="476" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now I just need to add colour, text, and design elements!</div>
<div>

<br />
It sometimes seems like new comics and books appear like magic, although the creators have been working for months or years on them...<br />
<br />
As I work towards releasing Ōtea: Rock of Ages 2, I will be documenting the journey of creation to make it more visible. To start off, here are some character cards exploring my designs for the inhabitants of Ōtea. This is where I begin, and the characters take on life as I sketch and write about them.<br />

Despite infrequent posting, work still proceeds on material for the world of Otea, albeit slowly. This is due to interruptions from related but separate creative projects already underway. In any event, I will post some of the notional sketch material here.

<a href="https://inktober.com/rules/" target="_blank">Inktober</a> is a drawing challenge following a set of prompts to draw and ink one illustration per day for the month of October. Since I already have a number of creative commitments that make demands on my time, one way to take part in the event is to try and make the prompts fit or tie into my other projects. Only two of these ended up being related directly to Otea - a stone-piled sun-dial derived from the prompt: #clock, and a guardian character that has ties to the folklore associated with the beaches of Otea, using the prompt: #guarded.

More work in progress showing another page of new artwork. The page layout process seems to be the longest part of the planning process - this can take quite a while getting it sorted. Artwork showing the wider world of Otea with denizens from the sea. I was really honoured and pleased to read a great review of <i>Otea: Rock of Ages</i> <i>1</i> recently, in the National Library's Services to Schools <i>Create Readers</i> blog.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The librarian (or teacher?) who wrote the review chose a photograph to go along with it of Panekire Bluff, above Lake Waikaremoana, which I could completely envisage within the fictional world of Otea. It confirms for me what an amazing landscape for stories we have in Aotearoa.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The review is particularly interesting, because it focuses on how teachers might use the comic to support learning about writing and illustrating in the graphic novel form. For instance, at the end of the issue I have included a few pages of notes - some explanations of my creative decisions in the story, character sketches, and draft page layouts. I simply enjoy reading about the working process of other writers and artists, and was thinking about what I would like to see myself! But this review reminds me that these notes can be useful for teaching and learning too...</div>

In May I presented a workshop and a Family Day session at the Auckland Writers Festival. It was great to be in the middle of so many young writers and readers, talking about myth, stories and comics, and showing the first part of Otea: Rock of Ages to a wide audience. </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the packed workshop for Year 7-11 students, I presented some ideas on character design inspired by mythology, and then the kids had a go at creating their own mythological creature. There were some cool and innovative designs created!</div>

A thoughtful review that appeared on the NZ COMICS Facebook Group by Eric Cresswell (aka <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/EHC-Art/772056599514459" target="_blank">EHC Art</a>)

<i>"Awesome read of te hoa's first comic book "Otea, Rock of Ages" by Zak Waipara. The art style feels as though you're looking through the eyes of our protagonist Kurutai, a child’s perspective - simple and abstracted as he interprets his new surroundings. There are nice graphical elements dispersed throughout the panels. But my favourite feature of this comic is the tale itself, it is almost poetic, especially the dialogue between the animals. Kurutai's innocence and unawareness makes for humorous effect. Also for those non te reo speakers or those unfamiliar to Maori mythology you get a bit of a 101 on Maori words and phrases used throughout a lot of the book. You can tell Zak has put a lot of time and effort into this mahi, all the more Tautoko to the bro for creating a comic that not only children will enjoy, but still has enough depth for older readers also. Seeing as it's kinda a prologue we're left hanging waiting for the next installment and the continuation of our characters’ adventures. Mauri tu, mauri ora, mauri moe, mauri mate!” </i></div>

Timed to coincide with Chromacon, I was asked to present at a Transmedia NZ meetup about <a href="http://www.thebigidea.co.nz/connect/events/2015/apr/162180-transmedia-nz-april-meetup" target="_blank">Transmedia and Comics</a> – specifically the use of comics as a storytelling medium; the benefits of comics as a platform for transmedia content; and best practice tips on collaborating with comic creators.</div>

Transmedia NZ is a group that supports the ongoing development of New Zealand’s transmedia production community, by creating opportunities for collaboration and sharing ideas.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
My 2014 Master of Design thesis (AUT) focused on transmedia storytelling by telling a part of the Otea story through a comic, motion comic and game, so I have had some experience in adapting and creating stories across platforms. </div>
